The National Test House (NTH) is the largest multi-location, multi-disciplinary industrial testing laboratory in India Industries, Institutions and Trade have been extensively using the unique infrastructure and expertise of NTH over the last eight decades.

One may just walk into the premises of any of the National Test Houses for exhaustive information. Neither previous appointment is required, nor any fee is charged for the exploratory discussion. All the discussions and the consultancy report of the project are kept highly confidential, true to the NTH tradition.
The Present liberalized and export oriented industrial atmosphere in the country has precipitated a new demand for improved quality products. It is obvious that the demanded quality level shall match the aspirations of the present day order and scale of free and competitive domestic and international market for survival and prosperity. Captains of Industry and Trade in the country are on look out for an organization having country wide network, infrastructure, time tested competence and repute, which provides Consultancy. But not many such organizations offering INDUSTRIAL QUALITY CONSULTANCY SERVICES [IQCS] are readily available. Hence, the vast and varied expertise and long experience of the NTH has prompted launching of NTH - IQCS, a forward step meant to bridge this new found demand and supply gap.
IQCS from NTH would be available at marginal cost which shall be worked out on the basis of the requirements and quantum of work involved.

The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) was established in 1945 at the initiative of Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha. It had a modest beginning at the Kenilworth site on Peddar Road, Bombay in 1945 and later moved to the Royal Yacht Club, Apollo Bunder until the buildings at the Navy Nagar Campus in South Bombay were ready in 1962. The Institute is proud to have produced many of the finest scientists of India who have been involved in seminal research in fields ranging from Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics and Science Education as well as some aspects of Public Health.

There are at present about 400 scientists in the Institute working in various disciplines grouped into three major schools: the School of Mathematics, the School of Natural Sciences and the School of Technology and Computer Science. The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education at Deonar, Bombay; The National Centre for Radio Astrophysics at Pune and The National Centre for Biological Sciences at Bangalore also form a part of TIFR activities.

The School of Mathematics has research interests in areas like Algebra, Algebraic Geometry, Lie Groups, Lie Algebras, Algebraic Groups, Representation Theory and Quantum Groups, Theory of Numbers, Combinatorics, Differential Geometry and Topology, Real and Complex Analysis, Ergodic Theory, Probability Theory on Groups and Mathematical Physics.

The School of Mathematics has a Centre in Bangalore dedicated to the study of Applied Mathematics where mathematicians work in the fields of Differential Equations, Harmonic Analysis, Numerical Analysis and Probability Theory.

Scientists in the School of Natural Sciences work mainly in the fields of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Chemical Sciences, Condensed Matter Physics, High Energy Physics, Molecular Biology, Nuclear & Atomic Physics, Radio Astronomy and Theoretical Physics. The Institute is also actively involved in the field of educational research with a special emphasis on school level education as well as some aspects of public health.

The Institute has several field stations and research facilities in different parts of the country. A Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope, the largest of its kind in the world, is operational at Khodad near Narayangaon, north of Pune and a large equatorially mounted cylindrical radio telescope and a high energy cosmic ray laboratory are operational at Udhagamandalam in Tamil Nadu. High Energy Cosmic ray and Gamma Ray laboratories are operated from Pachamarhi in Madhya Pradesh. TIFR runs a National Balloon Facility in Hyderabad which is among the best in the world and has the geographical advantage of being close to the geomagnetic equator. At Gauribidanur, TIFR scientists have built an extremely sensitive balance to study the difference between gravitational and inertial mass. A Heavy Ion Low Energy Accelerator capable of accelerating particles to moderate energies for studying heavy ion atomic interactions and a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility to study complex molecules are also housed in TIFR. The Institute's Dental Section has been actively involved in investigations pertaining to carcinogenic effects of tobacco.

In addition to the research laboratories, the facilities of TIFR include:
  • A large library in India with more than one hundred thousand books and journals in its collection. The library is fully computerized and provides microfilm, microfiche, audio - video and compact disk reading facilities.

  • A powerful central computing facility together with individually assigned personal computers and workstations for computation, control and monitoring of experiments and data analysis.

  • A network connected to the world grid through high speed communication networks.

  • A liquid helium facility for very low temperature experimental studies.

  • A large workshop and glass blowing section for manufacturing high precision instruments. Pioneering work done in the Institute in several areas has resulted in the establishment of new National organizations such as the Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER) and the National Centre for Software Technology (NCST). In addition, several projects for which technology was developed at the Institute, were transferred to the industry and other departments of the Government of India.

The Institute has acquired the status of a Deemed University as of June, 2002.

The National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRIP) is one of the largest and most important initiatives, taken by the Government of India, for development & upgradation of automotive testing, homologation and infrastructure facilities in the country.  NATRIP envisages an investment of Rs.1718 crores across 7 locations in the country.

The investment of Rs.1718 crore will be funded jointly by the Government and the Industry, over a period of 6 years. The first phase of NATRiP (first 3 years) will focus on building Infrastructure and capabilities for Testing and Validation to meet emerging requirements in line with National Automotive Safety and Emission roadmaps. In the subsequent phase (next 3 years), key ‘Centers of Excellence’ will be set up to develop national capabilities in frontier automotive technologies. Some of these ‘Centers of Excellence’ will aim at achieving high degree of convergence of India’s strengths in areas like Information Technology, Electronics, Alternative Energy sources, etc.

The project envisages setting up of the following broad facilities:-

A full-fledged testing and homologation centre within the northern hub of automotive industry at Manesar in the state of Haryana, 35 miles from the National Capital.
A full-fledged testing and homologation centre within the southern hub of automotive industry at Oragadam, 15 miles from Chennai, the state Capital of Tamil Nadu.
Comprehensive upgradation of existing testing and homologation facilities in the western hub at Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Pune and at Vehicle. Research and Development Establishment (VRDE), Ahmednagar in the state of Maharashtra.
A world-class Proving Ground on 4,098 acres of land in Central India at Pithampur, 15 miles from Indore in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
A Centre for Testing of Tractors and Off-Road Vehicles in the Northern region of the country, with national facility for accident data analysis and specialized driving training at Rae Bareilly, about 60 miles from Lucknow the state capital of Uttar Pradesh.
A Specialized Hill Area Driving Training Centre and an In-Use Vehicle Management Centre in the North Eastern region at Silchar in the state of Assam.

All facilities under NATRiP will be commissioned in phases to be completed by September 2011.

Geographical Indications of Goods are defined as that aspect of industrial property which refer to the geographical indication referring to a country or to a place situated therein as being the country or place of origin of that product.  Typically, such a name conveys an assurance of quality and distinctiveness which is essentially attributable to the fact of its origin in that defined geographical locality, region or country. Under Articles 1 (2) and 10 of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, geographical indications are covered as an element of IPRs.  They are also covered under Articles 22 to 24 of the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement, which was part of the Agreements concluding the Uruguay Round of GATT negotiations.
